What type of AMR systems exist?

There are many types of system capable of AMR and they are most widely used in the Half Hourly (HH) market. In this case, the meter is connected to a communications network and the Half Hourly Data Collector (HHDC) accesses the meter over that network and collects the meter’s data for use in Settlement. There are a number of options available for the communications such as Paknet (radio system), Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Power line Carrier (PLC).

The full options allowable under the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) are listed in Codes of Practice 1, 2, 3 and 5.

Currently, AMR solutions are being developed for use in the Non Half Hourly (NHH) market where the meter is connected to a communications network. In most cases the meter is electronic and the AMR is either connected to the output port or via a dedicated meter with an inbuilt AMR.
